In 1832, Samuel Morse came up with his idea of the electromagnetic telegraph and began early developments of the invention. In November of 1837, Morse was able to send a telegraph from ten miles away. On September 28 of the same year, Morse filed to receive a patent for his telegraph invention. In January of 1838, Morse changed the way of sending the messages to make it easier to read. Words were now represented by using a code for each letter so you did not have to encode and decode every word before sending the telegraph message. He successfully received his patent in 1840. In 1846, many telegraph lines are extended and new ones are created all over. Competition increases and Morse's patent claims were threatened by other telegraph companies. In 1857, Morse works with Cyrus Field to put the first telegraph cable under the ocean from North America to Europe. After many tries, they succeed in 1858. Samuel Morse died at age eighty one on April 2, 1872 in New York City.
General information about the Telegraph
The telegraph was invented to transmit information to others. So in some cases it could be an earlier lead to the telephone. A non- electric telegraph was first invented in 1794 by Claude Chappe. This was not a perfect machine that did not work as well as electric telegraph. Joseph Henry made a good electric telegraph that incorporated electricity but was not the greatest telegraph yet. The best telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse and was probably one of the best telegraphs for the time he proved the signals could be transmitted by wire. Because they could not transmitted voices through the telegraph dots and dashes were organized.A dot symbolized short beeps on the telegraph, dashes symbolized longer beeps. “What hath God wrought” was one of the first phrases used on the telegraph used by Morse. He used this phrase to contact his assistant and it worked. In 1881 the Postal telegraph system was invent but in 1943 it combined with the western union. In its peak the telegraph was used all over the United States. The system of dots and dashes was named after the inventor Samuel Morse, it was called Morse code.
